The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has emphasized that agro-allied products from the nation enjoy global acceptance. Faruok Salim, the Director-General of SON, stated that the organization would increase efforts to educate agro-allied product producers nationwide about adhering strictly to SON’s standards, in support of the government’s diversification goals.
Salim, represented by Talatu Ethan, the Director of the Southwest region, spoke at a workshop titled “Standard Adherence: Catalyst for Trade” held in Osogbo. He noted that SON plays a leading role in promoting diversification into agricultural products to boost revenue.
“Nigeria’s products have gained global acceptance, and the Federal Government, along with regulatory bodies, is collaborating with stakeholders to ensure that locally produced goods meet foreign countries’ specifications. The objective of this workshop is to raise awareness about the importance of standards and ensure that manufacturers, producers, and processors meet the minimum requirements of these standards.
“Our mandatory conformity assessment will enable local producers to create products that meet these minimum standards, allowing them to compete with foreign products. Manufacturers who deviate from these standards will face sanctions,” Salim stated.
Sulaiman Araokanmi, the Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria in Osun state, regarded the workshop as timely and crucial for empowering agro-allied producers across the country.
