US – Seven members of the medical team responsible for Diego Maradona’s care before his death in 2020 are now facing trial in Buenos Aires for homicide.
The trial, which began on Tuesday, will determine whether the negligence of Maradona’s doctors contributed to his death. The football legend suffered a fatal heart attack at home in November 2020, just two weeks after being discharged from the hospital following surgery for a brain bleed.
His family has accused the medical team of negligence, a cover-up, and even making derogatory comments about Maradona’s condition, branding them a “mafia.”
Medical Negligence or Unavoidable Tragedy?
Maradona, who struggled with drug addiction, obesity, and alcoholism for years, had previously survived severe health crises in 2000 and 2004. However, prosecutors argue that his death could have been prevented if he had received proper medical attention.
The accused include Maradona’s brain surgeon, psychiatrist, and nurses. They are charged with culpable homicide, which is similar to involuntary manslaughter, and could face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.
Daughter Speaks Out
Dalma Maradona, the late footballer’s eldest daughter, has released an audio recording that she claims proves serious medical irregularities in her father’s treatment. She also expressed fears about powerful individuals allegedly involved in the case.
“My mother is scared,” she revealed in an interview. “Afraid of the mafia, of those who control everything, have money and power. But I won’t stay silent. People need to know the truth.”
Dalma previously accused a “mafia of assassins” of causing her father’s death, stating that recordings exist that prove medical negligence and cover-ups.
A Legacy Under Scrutiny
Maradona remains one of football’s greatest icons, having led Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986. His infamous “Hand of God” goal and stunning solo effort against England in the quarter-finals cemented his legendary status.
The ongoing trial seeks justice for his untimely death and may finally uncover the truth about whether his medical team failed him in his final days.
