NIGERIA – The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all pornographic websites in the country.
The decision was reached following a motion sponsored by Hon. Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Tafoki expressed concerns about the increasing accessibility of pornography in Nigeria and its negative effects on society.
According to him, pornography is a growing global issue, and Nigeria has yet to take adequate steps to combat it. He emphasized that Nigeria is a “highly religious country” where both Islam and Christianity condemn nudity and obscenity.
Citing examples of other nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted laws banning pornography, Tafoki urged Nigeria to follow suit. He also referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists, who have highlighted the dangers of pornography addiction, linking it to issues such as adultery, prostitution, and moral decay.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he stated.
Following deliberations, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put the motion to a voice vote, and the House overwhelmingly supported it.
As part of the resolution, the House has directed the NCC to ensure that all internet service providers in the country immediately restrict access to pornographic content. The lawmakers further instructed the Commission to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
The resolution reflects a growing concern among Nigerian lawmakers about the impact of digital content on society, particularly on young people.
