FG Approves ₦10 Billion for Health Commodities

Abuja, Nigeria   —  The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved over ₦10 billion for the procurement of essential health products to enhance access and affordability of medical services across the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, during a briefing with State House correspondents in Abuja following the FEC meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

According to the Minister, the funding will cover three key areas, including the procurement of third-line antiretroviral drugs, diagnostic kits for diabetes, and a broader medical relief initiative.

“Previously, first- and second-line antiretroviral drugs were approved. Now, an additional ₦997 million has been allocated for third-line drugs to support individuals living with HIV,”  Professor Pate explained.

He further highlighted that diabetes, one of the fastest-growing health concerns in Nigeria, is a major focus of the initiative.

“Many people remain undiagnosed, and for the first time, a local company will produce diabetes test kits domestically,”  he noted.

The procurement includes glucose monitoring devices to be distributed nationwide, alongside training for healthcare workers at primary health centers and other medical facilities.

“This initiative is designed to benefit low-income and vulnerable Nigerians who struggle to afford these critical health services,” the Minister emphasized.

In addition, President Bola Tinubu had previously advocated for a medical relief program aimed at reducing the cost of essential medicines, including antibiotics, antihypertensives, and anti-diabetic drugs.

“An additional ₦4.5 billion has been set aside for these medicines, many of which will be locally manufactured, supporting Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry,” Professor Pate added.

The Minister also disclosed a second approval granted by FEC for the procurement of a mobile X-ray machine for the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.

This package includes the rehabilitation and equipping of a 64-slice computerized tomography (CT) scan, at a total cost of ₦2.1 billion.

“This investment will significantly enhance diagnostic and clinical care, not just for Bauchi State but for the entire region,” he concluded.
