Copenhagen, Denmark — Denmark U21 head coach Steffen Højer has affirmed that the national team is keeping a close watch on the development of Manchester United forward Chido Obi.
The 17-year-old striker has now made three first-team appearances for the English club, a feat that has drawn significant attention from Danish football authorities.
Speaking in an interview with Bold, Højer acknowledged Obi’s rising profile but noted that a decision on his inclusion in the U21 squad remains under evaluation.
“We are all closely following Chido’s progress. If I weren’t paying attention to a player of his caliber, I wouldn’t be doing my job properly,” Højer stated.
Acknowledging Denmark’s abundance of attacking talent, he emphasized Obi’s potential.
“There has been a long-standing demand for quality strikers, and right now, we have an exciting pool of attacking players. Chido is certainly among them,” he added.
Højer also highlighted the significance of Obi’s early breakthrough at Manchester United.
“It’s rare to see a 17-year-old stepping onto the pitch at Old Trafford, so of course, we are keeping a very close eye on him.”
On the prospect of Obi joining the U21 setup, Højer explained that the decision would be made progressively.
“Determining the right time for Chido to join the U21s and deciding which national team he ultimately represents is an ongoing process. He last featured for Denmark’s U18 side, but since then, he has earned first-team minutes at United. That makes things even more intriguing.”
Denmark’s football authorities are expected to continue monitoring Obi’s progress before making any formal decisions regarding his national team future.
