NIGERIA – Nigeria’s political landscape is undergoing a major shift as a new coalition emerges to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. Reports indicate that this alliance consists of disgruntled members from Tinubu’s inner circle—those who feel marginalized after the 2023 elections—as well as opposition figures. While the coalition’s structure remains uncertain, sources suggest that it aims to either take over the Social Democratic Party (SDP) or establish a new political platform, similar to the formation of the APC in 2013.
Leading this movement is former Kaduna State Governor and ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. A founding member of the APC, El-Rufai’s defection and vocal criticism of the Tinubu administration have sparked significant debate. He has openly accused the government of incompetence and claimed that ministerial positions were bought rather than earned on merit. His departure is particularly striking given his previous vow to remain in the APC for life.
El-Rufai further asserts that former President Muhammadu Buhari supports his actions, though Buhari has since reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC. The unfolding drama draws comparisons to Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, as the internal struggles within the APC resemble historical betrayals. Tinubu’s administration, however, has dismissed El-Rufai’s criticisms as driven by personal ambition. Despite this, some analysts caution that underestimating the coalition could be a costly mistake, much like how the PDP failed to recognize the APC’s strength before the 2015 elections.
However, the coalition faces significant challenges. Ethnic and regional politics may complicate the selection of a presidential candidate, as Northern politicians push for one of their own, while their Southern counterparts—particularly from the South-East and South-South—demand representation. Additionally, the SDP, which the coalition reportedly intends to use as a platform, is currently under the control of Adewole Adebayo, who has already declared his presidential ambition for 2027.
Ultimately, Nigerian politics remains a game of strategy. The coming years will reveal whether this coalition has the strength to threaten Tinubu’s grip on power. His opponents argue that governing Nigeria is far more complex than running Lagos, while his supporters remain confident in his political mastery. As tensions escalate, the nation watches closely to see how this power struggle unfolds.
