Asaba, Nigeria— The Delta State Government has introduced stringent measures to curb the rising number of non-resident pregnant women accessing its free maternal healthcare services.
Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, stated that the influx of non-residents has distorted the state’s healthcare statistics, prompting the need for stricter eligibility criteria.
To ensure that only Delta State residents benefit from the program, the government now mandates all beneficiaries to provide proof of residency along with a valid identity card issued by the Delta State Contributory Health Commission. This policy applies to all aspects of the free maternal healthcare initiative, including antenatal care, childbirth, and cesarean sections.
The Delta State Contributory Health Commission has enrolled over 2.5 million individuals under the scheme, including those covered by the equity health plan. To enhance service delivery, the commission has also:
– Established dedicated health insurance units across zonal and major health facilities.
– Deployed agents to pharmacy sections in accredited hospitals to ensure prescribed medications are properly dispensed.
With these measures in place, the government aims to sustain the integrity of its healthcare system while prioritizing services for Delta State residents.
