Arsenal has secured the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in a deal worth up to £31.6 million.
The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract, with an option for an additional year. Arsenal will pay an initial £27.4 million, with an additional £4.2 million in potential add-ons.
Merino, who was part of Spain’s victorious Euro 2024 squad, played a key role in all seven matches of the tournament, including scoring a decisive extra-time goal in the quarter-final against Germany.
He is Arsenal’s third signing of the current transfer window, following the arrivals of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, whose loan move from Brentford has been made permanent.
Merino adds depth to Mikel Arteta’s midfield, competing with Declan Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Ødegaard. He previously had a stint in the Premier League with Newcastle United before joining Real Sociedad in 2018, where he played alongside Ødegaard during the Norwegian’s loan spell from Real Madrid in the 2019-20 season.
With 28 international caps, Merino made 45 appearances for Real Sociedad last season across all competitions, scoring eight goals.
