31.8 Million Nigerians Facing Acute Food Insecurity

A recent report from various development partners reveals that 31.8 million Nigerians are currently experiencing acute food insecurity, worsened by malnutrition among women and children.

The report, presented by organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), GIZ, and Agsys, was disclosed at a joint review meeting in Abuja focused on the implementation of Nigeria’s food systems.

Stakeholders at the meeting emphasized the need for a multi-sectoral approach to tackle food scarcity, stating that collaboration with civil society and the private sector is essential to extend nutrition efforts across the country.

Development partners also reaffirmed their commitment to transforming Nigeria’s food system, pledging continued support to address the country’s food challenges.

Dr. Emeka Obi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, who opened the meeting, stated that the primary goal was to evaluate the progress made in implementing food transformation strategies. Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were also invited to share updates and present initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s food system.

Dr. Obi expressed gratitude to the development partners, particularly GIZ, for their dedication in supporting Nigeria’s food system transformation, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in finding innovative solutions.

Dr. Sanjo Faniran, the National Convener of Food Systems in Nigeria and Director of Social Development at the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, commended the stakeholders’ efforts. He explained that the review meeting aimed to assess progress, identify gaps, and provide recommendations for further improvement through peer reviews among MDAs.

The forum featured presentations on topics such as Food Systems Transformation, Implementation Strategies, Multi-Sectoral Collaboration, and Financing for Food Systems Transformation. A total of 24 MDAs participated in the meeting.
