Nigeria – The Federal Government has officially commenced the payment of ₦77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement of the salary increase initially sparked excitement among corps members nationwide. However, the delayed implementation caused frustration, as they continued receiving the previous ₦33,000 allowance for nearly six months after the announcement in September 2024.
A serving corps member in Kwara State, identified as Adepoju, confirmed to Tribune Online that the payment has begun, describing the increase as “long overdue.” He noted that disbursement appears to be happening in batches, as some corps members have already received their payments while others are still waiting.
The news has triggered various reactions on social media. Some users expressed excitement over the long-awaited increase, while others pointed out the lack of widespread celebration compared to when the government delayed payment.
One Twitter user, @ToluDaniel10, acknowledged the efforts of an unidentified individual, suggesting they played a role in pressuring the government to fulfill its promise. Another, @fimlex2, observed the contrast in online discussions, noting, “NYSC don pay corpers 77k now, see as everywhere just quiet.”
Meanwhile, the increase aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to implement a new minimum wage structure, following demands from labor unions.
