ECOWAS Court Urges Technology Adoption to Cut Costs

The President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves, has emphasized the need for technology-driven solutions to tackle the financial constraints faced by the Court.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day judicial retreat, Gonçalves highlighted the importance of innovation in optimizing resources and enhancing the Court’s operations.

The retreat, themed “Judicial Case Management: Relation Between the Office of the Honourable President, Honourable Judges, Registry Department, and Legal Research & Documentation Department,” aims to improve the Court’s efficiency and foster collaboration among its various departments. Judges, directors, and staff members are participating in the event to reflect on current practices and develop strategic plans.

Gonçalves described the retreat as a crucial platform for reassessing internal processes and strengthening interdepartmental cooperation. He expressed optimism that the discussions would yield practical resolutions to enhance the Court’s effectiveness.

Key topics for deliberation include the enforcement of court decisions in member states, harmonization of rulings, and the translation of judgments.

The retreat will also address the challenges posed by differences between common law and civil law systems, while seeking to improve collaboration between judges and legal research teams.

Chief Registrar Dr. Yaouza Ouro-Sama noted that the retreat aligns with Article 32 of the Court’s Protocol, which calls for periodic reviews of procedural rules. He stressed that the discussions would focus on refining case management practices and generating actionable recommendations to streamline the Court’s operations.
