Retirees plan to protest at the finance ministry over unpaid pensions.

Federal pensioners who are part of the Contributory Pension Scheme have expressed their grievances over unpaid pensions and are set to take action to demand the release of the accrued gratuities owed to them.

Following a peaceful rally at the Ministry of Finance in November 2024, where they appreciated the minister’s handling of their concerns, the pensioners are now calling for the government to fulfill their outstanding payments from March 2023 to November 2024.

The pensioners are specifically demanding the immediate release of the 21 months of accrued rights owed to retired public workers, as well as the payment of various unpaid pension increments, including increases in 2007, 2010, and 2024. They have urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the Contributory Pension Scheme sector and clear all government liabilities before December 16, 2024.

The pensioners’ union leadership has been mandated by members nationwide to take action, and they have declared their intent to occupy the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation in Abuja from December 16, 2024, until their demands are met. They emphasized the importance of the government addressing their concerns and meeting their demands promptly.

Their main demands include the immediate release of the outstanding accrued rights, payment of unpaid pension increments, and various pension increases over the years. The pensioners are determined to continue their protest until the government addresses their grievances and fulfills their entitlements. They have called for urgent action to resolve the situation and ensure that retired public workers receive their rightful pensions and benefits.
