Young Electrician Electrocuted in Oyo State

Eruwa, Oyo State —  A 28-year-old electrician tragically lost his life on Wednesday while attempting to fix an electrical fault on an active power line in Odo Babaode, located in Eruwa, the administrative center of Ibarapa East Local Government Area.

Confirming the incident, Mr. Akinyemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, disclosed that the emergency was reported at approximately 3:29 p.m. by a concerned resident, Mr. Adelanre Adeyinka.

In a swift response, a rescue team led by Principal Fire Superintendent 1 (PFS1) Peluola Babatunde was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, responders found the victim already electrocuted. Safety protocols were immediately activated to protect nearby residents and prevent further hazards.

The deceased was retrieved from the 33KV high-tension cables belonging to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and subsequently handed over to officers from the Eruwa Police Division for further investigation and documentation.

According to Mr. Akinyinka, preliminary findings suggest that the victim attempted to carry out repairs on a live electrical line without first ensuring that power from the feeder had been shut down.

In the aftermath of the incident, Mr. Babatunde Ogunkanbi, a senior official, issued a strong public advisory. He urged citizens to prioritize safety and stressed that electrical tasks involving active lines should strictly be handled by certified professionals.

“Life is irreplaceable,” he stated. “Only qualified engineers and technicians should engage with live electrical infrastructure.”

The Oyo State Fire Services reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and continuous sensitization to prevent avoidable tragedies.
