Ibadan, Oyo State — A devastating fire broke out on Thursday night in Ibadan, destroying at least 12 shops at the Mayegun Cement Store Market, Agodi-Gate.
The blaze began around 10:55 pm at Block A, No. 64, Mayegun Cement Store Market in the Araromi area and continued to rage for over three hours before being brought under control.
Eyewitnesses told Newsmen on Friday that the fire caused significant damage, destroying property worth millions of naira. Early investigations indicated that an electricity surge near combustible materials sparked the fire.
Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency was alerted to the fire at 11:02 pm on Thursday, April 10, 2025. He explained that the control room received a distress call from a local resident, Mr. Young, who reported the blaze at the market.
Firefighters, led by Cfs Jimoh, arrived promptly at the scene and found several lockup shops engulfed in flames. They immediately acted to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding areas.
Akinyinka said, “The fire affected 12 shops, but we were able to save several other properties, preventing further loss. The team returned to the station at 3:18 am and is currently on standby.”
The fire service has assured that investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.
