Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has given the green light for the recruitment of 34 resident doctors under a seven-year fixed-term residency training program.
Confirming the development, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, revealed that these doctors represent the first batch of a 60-resident trainee recruitment initiative spanning eight faculties within FCTA hospitals.
According to Olayinka, this move marks a significant shift, as it is the first time resident doctors are being employed outside the Health Management Board’s structure. He emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance healthcare delivery by expanding opportunities for medical professionals.
“The breakdown of the 34 newly employed doctors is as follows: five in psychiatry, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynecology,” Olayinka disclosed.
He further announced that the FCT Civil Service Commission is set to initiate recruitment for the remaining 26 resident doctor positions. These will be distributed as follows: one in psychiatry, four in internal medicine, eight in general surgery, five in anesthesiology, and eight in pediatrics.
With this initiative, the FCT administration aims to strengthen the healthcare workforce, ensuring improved medical services across its hospitals.
