Lagos, Nigeria — The Yovoyan community in Badagry is reeling from shock and grief following the alleged killing of three individuals in a violent land dispute involving a former police officer.
The victims, identified as Richard Atideka, Latevi Atideka, and Muji Onilude, were reportedly shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday, April 1, 2025. While Richard and Latevi were natives of Yovoyan, Muji hailed from the neighboring Gberefu community.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attack was carried out by the ex-officer alongside an unidentified accomplice. One of the survivors, David Atideka, provided a harrowing account of the ordeal, recalling how the incident unfolded between 2:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. at the Atideka family compound.
“I was in my room talking to my wife when I stepped outside to urinate. That was when I noticed two armed men approaching. I quickly took cover. They stormed my room, asked for me, and then shot my wife in the head. Out of fear, I fled to my elder brother’s house, only to find him already dead,” he narrated.
David further claimed that he recognized one of the attackers as his own brother, a former police officer. “There is no doubt, it was him. I saw him leaving the compound with another armed man after the shooting,” he stated.
Reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) suggest that the attack stemmed from a long-standing land ownership dispute between the suspect and his brothers. The ex-officer had allegedly been attempting to take possession of land belonging to David and Richard Atideka.
As of now, law enforcement authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
The tragic event has left the community in mourning, with residents calling for swift justice and intervention from the authorities.
