Abuja, Nigeria — A devastating road accident in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has claimed six lives, left several injured, and resulted in the destruction of 14 vehicles.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening near the Nyanya Bridge when a Dangote truck, heavily loaded with cement, lost control and crashed into vehicles stuck in traffic.
According to the FCT Police Command, the truck, approaching from AYA, veered off course and rammed into multiple stationary cars, triggering a massive inferno that engulfed several vehicles.
“The impact was severe,” stated SP Josephine Adeh, the Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command. “A distress call was received at the Karu Division at about 6:58 PM, reporting the horrifying scene of a trailer plowing into trapped vehicles, which immediately went up in flames.”
Emergency responders, including firefighters, swiftly arrived at the location, battling the raging inferno to rescue trapped victims. Unfortunately, six individuals were confirmed dead at the Karu General Hospital, where their remains have been deposited at the morgue.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with bystanders and motorists desperately trying to flee as thick smoke and flames spread rapidly.
Expressing deep condolences to the families of the victims, the FCT Police Command assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident and prevent future tragedies.
“In light of this incident, we urge all road users to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to speed limits, especially in high-traffic areas,” Adeh stated.
The police also called on residents to remain vigilant and report emergencies or suspicious activities through the FCT emergency response lines: 08032003913, 08028940883, and 07057337653. The Complaint Response Unit can be reached at 08107314192.
