The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on the appeals concerning the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States, filed by Muritala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), respectively.
Ajaka and Sylva both contested the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the 2023 governorship elections in their states. On Monday, the Supreme Court announced that it would reserve its decisions in these significant cases.
In Kogi State, Ajaka is challenging the decision of a three-member tribunal that confirmed Ahmed Usman Ododo of the APC as the elected governor. After his petition was dismissed by the Appeal Court in June for lacking merit, Ajaka claimed the ruling was marred by irregularities and manipulation. He urged his supporters to stay united and persistent in their quest for justice, emphasizing that the fight to reclaim his mandate goes beyond the appellate court’s ruling.
In Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva voiced his dissatisfaction with the election outcome through a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Julius Bokoru. Sylva’s appeal, which disputed the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s decision, was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja in July. Justice James Abundaga upheld the victory of Douye Diri and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 11, 2023 election.
The Supreme Court’s reserved judgments will be crucial in shaping the political landscapes of both Kogi and Bayelsa States.
