Subscribers Reject Proposed 40% Telecom Tariff Hike

Telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria have strongly opposed a proposed 40% hike in telecom service tariffs set to take effect in 2025.

The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS), in a communiqué signed by its National President, Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, and Secretary, Barr. Bayo Omotubora, expressed its disapproval, calling the tariff hike insensitive given the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reportedly approved the increase, which would raise voice call rates from N11.00 to N15.40 per minute, SMS charges from N4.00 to N5.60, and a 1GB data bundle from N1,000 to N1,400. NATCOMS argued that this move burdens consumers already grappling with inflation and economic hardship.

“The decision is insensitive and not in the interest of telecom service consumers,” the communiqué read. “The rising cost of goods and services has made life extremely difficult, and this increase is one burden too many.”

NATCOMS urged telecom operators to explore alternatives to address operational cost challenges, such as leveraging the Nigerian Stock Exchange for funding, rather than imposing additional financial strain on consumers.

The association also highlighted that if the proposed tax reform bills before the National Assembly are passed, telecommunication services would attract a 12.5% tax rate, further escalating costs.

Meanwhile, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) had earlier called for a tariff review to avert sector shutdowns, citing increased operational costs. However, NCC sources denied approving the fresh tariff hike.

The controversy has sparked public outcry, with subscribers and consumer advocacy groups calling for immediate reconsideration of the proposed hike to safeguard affordable access to telecommunication services.
