Sokoto, Nigeria — The Sokoto State Government has commenced the payment of the new national minimum wage of N70,000 to workers across the state, fulfilling a key campaign promise by Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
The implementation, which begins today, Monday, January 27, extends to state civil servants, local government employees, and Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) staff. This move aligns with the federal government’s approved minimum wage policy.
Governor Aliyu, in a statement, urged civil servants to reciprocate the government’s gesture by demonstrating increased commitment, punctuality, and dedication to their duties. “With the commencement of this new minimum wage, we expect renewed hard work and seriousness from our workforce,” he remarked.
The governor also pledged to maintain prompt salary payments, ensuring workers receive their wages between the 19th and 22nd of each month. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to being workers-friendly.
Additionally, the state government has allocated N500 million monthly to clear outstanding gratuities, while another N300 million has been earmarked to settle gratuities for retirees from 2023 to date.
The administration aims to ensure that no gratuity debts remain by the end of its tenure, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to prioritize workers’ welfare and financial security.
