Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his achievements in infrastructure while urging immediate economic reforms to tackle pressing challenges faced by residents.
The commendation and recommendations were contained in a communiqué issued following the Council’s first Congress of the year, held on Saturday at its Utako Secretariat, Abuja.
Infrastructure Gains, Economic Challenges
The Congress acknowledged the significant infrastructural developments under Wike’s administration but expressed concern over the rising cost of living, urging the Federal Government to take swift action to ease the burden on citizens.
Delegates highlighted key issues such as irregular power and water supply, which continue to disrupt daily life and hinder businesses. “Erratic electricity and water supply place an immense strain on resources, affecting households and economic activities,” the communiqué stated.
The Congress also raised alarm over growing insecurity in the FCT, including ritual killings and other crimes, attributing much of the unrest to worsening economic conditions. It called for collaborative efforts to address safety concerns and restore public confidence.
NUJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Grace Ike, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to fostering unity within the profession and advocating for members’ welfare. “This Congress is not just a meeting; it’s a testament to our shared dedication to the unity and progress of journalism,” she remarked.
The event, which brought together over 400 members, including former Council leaders and executives from the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), concluded with a resolution to engage relevant authorities in addressing the region’s economic, social, and security issues.
