Sanwo-Olu Declares Public Holiday for Isese Day on Tuesday

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared Tuesday, August 20, 2024, as a public holiday for all public servants in the state in observance of this year’s Isese Day celebration.

Isese, which translates to “tradition,” is a significant cultural observance with millions of adherents across Yorubaland.

The announcement was made through a circular issued by the State’s Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, stating that Governor Sanwo-Olu has approved the work-free day for public servants to celebrate Isese Day. The circular also noted that public servants are expected to resume work on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 8:00 a.m.

This marks the first time the Lagos State Government has declared a public holiday specifically for Isese Day, following the United Nations’ recognition of August 20 as World Traditional Religion (Isese) Day.

The circular emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting traditional institutions and promoting indigenous traditions by preserving cultural heritage. It reads: “In emphasizing our commitment to traditional institutions and enhancing the promotion of indigenous traditions, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved that Tuesday, 20th August, 2024, be declared a Work-Free Day for public servants in the State. Consequently, work will resume on Wednesday, 21st August, 2024, at 8:00 a.m.”

All public officers have been urged to take note of the circular and ensure it is widely communicated across the service.
