Abuja, Nigeria — Aminu Babba, one of the Kano kingmakers contesting the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, has expressed satisfaction with the recent Appeal Court ruling on the emirate dispute.
Babba made this known while addressing journalists on the ruling, affirming his commitment to upholding legal processes in the ongoing case.
“We approached the Court of Appeal seeking a stay of execution of its earlier judgment,” Babba stated. “I was dissatisfied with the initial ruling, which is why I proceeded to the Supreme Court for further appeal. The law grants me the right to seek a stay of execution or file a legal challenge against those enforcing the contested decision.”
He also dismissed various interpretations of the judgment, particularly those presented by the Kano State government, emphasizing that adherence to the rule of law is paramount.
“The claim that the Court of Appeal cannot review its own ruling is misleading,” he asserted. “If Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi continues to act as emir, it would be a direct violation of the court’s decision. I am prepared to challenge him legally on this matter.”
Calling for legal accountability, Babba urged the Kano State Governor to ensure strict compliance with the ruling while appealing to security agencies, including the police and the DSS, to maintain peace and prevent any escalation of tensions.
“We do not seek chaos,” he stated. “I advise all parties to respect the law and avoid inciting public unrest.”
Meanwhile, the Kano State government announced that it had instructed its legal team to thoroughly review the court’s decision before determining the next course of action in line with existing laws.
The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, confirmed this development while briefing journalists, reaffirming the government’s commitment to a lawful resolution of the emirate crisis.
