Nigeria: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant seizure, intercepting cocaine concealed in prayer beads and locally made shoes
According to Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s spokesperson, some suspects have been arrested in connection with the seizure. Babafemi emphasized that the act was particularly egregious, occurring during the holy months of fasting, when both Muslims and Christians are observing their faith.
The seizure highlights the critical challenges posed by illicit drug trafficking and consumption in Nigeria, which threaten public health, security, and socio-economic stability. Nigeria’s strategic location has transformed it from a transit route to a significant consumer and distributor of narcotics. Recent enforcement actions underscore the severity of the issue, with notable seizures including 19.4 kilograms of cocaine valued at approximately $2.93 million at the Lagos airport in September 2024.
