Rivers APC Divided Over Amaechi’s Membership

Port Harcourt, Nigeria The political landscape within the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been further fractured by the controversy surrounding the membership status of former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi.

The rift deepened as the party’s state chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, declared that Amaechi and his loyalists were no longer part of the APC.  However, the faction led by Emeka Beke swiftly rejected this stance, arguing that Okocha and his camp lacked the authority to expel Amaechi from a party he played a pivotal role in building.

The dispute gained momentum following Amaechi’s recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration during a gathering of perceived political opponents. This sparked backlash from Okocha, who, at a press conference in Port Harcourt, distanced the Rivers APC from Amaechi’s remarks.

“Let it be clear to Nigerians, especially in Rivers State, that Amaechi spoke for himself and not for our people,” Okocha stated. “For a long time, he has distanced himself from party activities, and every attempt to bring him to the table has failed. His outbursts only confirm that he has moved on.”

Okocha further questioned Amaechi’s contributions to Rivers State during his tenure, arguing that despite holding a national position as Minister of Transportation, he failed to deliver substantial projects to the state.

Responding to these claims, Darlington Nwauju, the Publicity Secretary of the Emeka Beke-led faction, dismissed Okocha’s position, asserting that Amaechi could not be sidelined from the APC. He accused the Okocha-led group of using Amaechi’s name to stir political tension for personal gains.

“Why is Amaechi’s name the only currency that Okocha and his allies can trade with? Can he push out the very person who built the APC in Rivers State?” Nwauju queried.

The ongoing division within the Rivers APC underscores a deep-seated struggle for dominance, further complicating the party’s internal cohesion ahead of future elections.
