Abuja, Nigeria — The Police Service Commission (PSC) has directed the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or have exceeded 60 years of age.
This directive was made during the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting of 2025, chaired by DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd). The meeting had notable attendees, including Justice Adamu Paul Galumje (retd), Commissioner representing the Judiciary; DIG Taiwo Lakanu (retd), and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
In a statement released by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission emphasized that its previous stance on service duration conflicted with established public service rules.
“The earlier decision contradicted the principle of service merger and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement after 35 years of service or upon reaching 60 years of age,” Ani stated.
Consequently, the Commission resolved to enforce the immediate retirement of officers who fall under these criteria, reaffirming its commitment to upholding statutory regulations.
The decision has been communicated to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for swift implementation.
This development comes just 24 hours after the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, clarified the legal status of IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure. Despite turning 60 on September 4, 2024, Egbetokun’s appointment remains valid for four years, effective from October 31, 2023.
The PSC reiterated its dedication to maintaining professionalism and adherence to service rules in the Nigerian Police Force.
