President Tinubu Meets Delta Governor Oborevwori Following Defection to APC

Abuja, NigeriaPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a meeting with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, marking their first official engagement since the governor’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Oborevwori arrived at the State House around 3:45 PM, unaccompanied, as observed by correspondents. The meeting underscores the ongoing political realignments within Nigeria’s South-South region, particularly following the significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape.

On April 23, 2025, Governor Oborevwori, along with his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, all commissioners, and local government chairpersons, formally transitioned from the PDP to the APC. This move ended the PDP’s uninterrupted control of Delta State since 1999 and is viewed as a strategic alignment with the federal government.

The defections are part of a broader trend affecting the PDP, which has seen similar shifts in Rivers and Cross River states. These developments have reduced the PDP’s governorship stronghold to ten states, signaling a significant transformation in the nation’s political dynamics.

Speculations are rife about potential future defections, with names like Governors Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Abba Yusuf of Kano, and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers being mentioned as possible new entrants to the APC.

The meeting between President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori is seen as a consolidation of the APC’s growing influence and a testament to the shifting allegiances within Nigeria’s political landscape.
