Petrol Price Reaches ₦1,400 in Ondo: Residents Express Concerns

The recent hike in petrol prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has sparked a range of reactions from residents in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. The sharp increase has taken many by surprise, as the price of petrol has surged from ₦580-₦950 per liter to a staggering ₦1,400 per liter, despite ongoing demands for lower commodity prices.

Some residents, like Mrs. Funmi Ajayi and Alhaji Usman Abdullahi, voiced their concerns over the rising cost, warning that it would further deepen poverty among the population. Mrs. Adenike Olabanji, a housewife, expressed frustration over the cascading impact of the fuel price hike on food prices, while also criticizing certain oil marketers for selling fuel above government-approved prices. She called for greater consideration for the average Nigerian.

Others, such as Mrs. Bukola Akindele, Mr. Gbenga Oluwalogbon, and Mr. Fola Awodugba, acknowledged that the price increase may be a necessary response to current economic realities. However, they urged the government to implement measures to ease the financial strain on citizens. They also stressed the importance of revitalizing Nigeria’s refineries to reduce dependence on imported fuel and stabilize the domestic market.
