Numerous supporters and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) staged a protest on Wednesday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office, contesting the results of the September 21 governorship election. The protesters claimed that INEC was compromised and failed to announce the true results, asserting that their party emerged victorious.
Demonstrators displayed placards bearing anti-INEC slogans and criticism of President Bola Tinubu. The protest temporarily blocked one lane of Aduwawa Road, near the INEC office, as they demanded the announcement of the “actual” election results.
The Edo State Election Petition Tribunal, however, reported that it had yet to receive any petitions from political parties challenging the election outcome. Mu’azu Bagudu, the Tribunal’s Secretary, informed Vanguard that parties have 20 days from the announcement of election results to file their petitions.
During the protest, Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Director General of the Asue/Ogie Governorship Campaign Council, addressed the crowd, declaring, “INEC does not exist anymore; APC has destroyed INEC, and we will not allow this to stand.” He emphasized that those who fought for democracy would not accept a shift towards a dictatorial regime. Iduoriyekemwen stated that voters were clear about their choice, supporting Asue Ighodalo as their governor, and criticized the handling of results by INEC.
While expressing doubts about the judiciary, he affirmed their intention to take grievances to the election tribunal. Hon. Tony Aziegbemi, state chairman of the PDP, echoed these sentiments, stating that the party would have accepted the results had the election been conducted fairly. He asserted that preliminary analyses indicated Asue Ighodalo had clearly won the election, pledging to present their case to the tribunal in good faith.
