At least 169 residents from the Gwajibo Mudi community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State are feared dead following a tragic boat accident in Gwajibo village, located in neighboring Niger State.
Reports from LEADERSHIP previously indicated that the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) had rescued around 100 individuals involved in the incident. However, credible sources have since revealed that only 31 out of an estimated 200 victims have been successfully rescued.
In response to the tragedy, the Kwara State government dispatched a high-level delegation, led by Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engr. Yakubu Danladi-Alihu, to Gwajibo Mudi to offer condolences to the families of the victims.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed his shock and sorrow in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye. He stated, “I am deeply concerned about this devastating incident involving at least 200 individuals from the Gwajibo Mudi community.”
The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Mohammed Mu’azu Shehu, and the people of Gwajibo, emphasizing the need for immediate humanitarian assistance. He has directed the state emergency management agency to support relief efforts for the victims, survivors, and their families.
