Abuja, Nigeria — The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to members to prioritize the party’s stability and growth over personal or sectional interests as internal tensions continue to challenge its operations.
Addressing journalists after an emergency meeting, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara emphasized the need for unity and urged stakeholders to resolve ongoing conflicts within the party.
To facilitate the reconciliation process, the BoT announced the formation of a conflict resolution committee led by Kabiru Turaki (SAN), tasked with finding lasting solutions to the political deadlock.
The crisis intensified on Wednesday when security operatives forcibly removed Mr. Ude Okoye, who claims the position of National Secretary, from a party meeting. The situation deteriorated further as thugs reportedly loyal to Okoye disrupted the gathering, leading to chaos and the abrupt end of the meeting.
Party insiders attribute the strife to deep-seated divisions within the National Working Committee. Factions reportedly aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors Forum and maintains a strong alliance with Rivers State Governor Siminalaye Fubara, are said to be at the heart of the discord.
The BoT reiterated its commitment to fostering peace and strengthening the party’s internal structure, urging all members to work together for the collective good.
