Abuja, Nigeria — Former presidential aide, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has tendered a public apology to the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over previous criticisms of his leadership in the oil and gas sector.
The apology coincides with recent developments in the petroleum industry, including the resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries following extensive rehabilitation. These advancements, alongside other achievements, have prompted a change in Okupe’s perspective.
In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja to commemorate Kyari’s 60th birthday, Okupe lauded the NNPCL chief for his transformative leadership. He admitted that he was previously skeptical of NNPCL’s ability to deliver on its mandates, reflecting on his tenure under former President Olusegun Obasanjo when many doubted the capabilities of the corporation.
“I was dismissive of Kyari’s leadership and even laughed at the idea of NNPCL’s creation,” Okupe admitted. However, he acknowledged that Kyari and his team have exceeded expectations by addressing critical challenges in the oil and gas sector.
Okupe highlighted key achievements under Kyari’s leadership, including the revival of Nigeria’s refineries, strategic infrastructure upgrades, and initiatives that have improved the sector’s efficiency. He particularly commended the significant reduction in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), noting that it has eased economic pressures on Nigerians.
“This remarkable achievement deserves widespread commendation,” Okupe stated, emphasizing the positive impact Kyari’s leadership has had on public perception of the NNPCL.
As part of his tribute, Okupe extended heartfelt congratulations to Kyari, describing him as a visionary leader whose efforts have earned national respect. “I pray that Almighty God blesses you with continued wisdom, strength, and success,” Okupe said. “May your efforts further alleviate the challenges faced by Nigerians and contribute to the prosperity of our nation.”
The statement underscores a notable shift in Okupe’s stance, as he joins others in celebrating Kyari’s achievements in leading one of Nigeria’s most vital sectors.
