OAU Student Killed by Driver at Campus Gate

Tragedy struck today at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as a female student, Esu Rita EMA, lost her life in a horrific accident involving a  driver. The incident occurred near the university’s main gate along the Ife-Ibadan Expressway, a spot frequented by students residing in the nearby Asherifa area.

The driver, identified as Lasisi Sodiq Segun, was reportedly driving recklessly from the Lagere area before the tragic event unfolded. According to eyewitnesses, Lasisi had been seen speeding erratically before crashing into Rita, who was attempting to cross the road. The impact was described as devastating, with the force of the collision said to have shattered the student’s body.

The accident has sparked widespread grief and outrage across the campus, with students calling for justice and ensuring that the responsible driver is held accountable. There are growing concerns among students that the driver could potentially be released from custody due to Nigeria’s often flawed justice system. Students have urged the university’s Students’ Union, under the leadership of President Orfficial Dhoktor Bush, to ensure that Lasisi Sodiq Segun remains in police custody until justice is served.

The university community is in mourning as students, staff, and friends express their condolences for the deceased student. The tragic event has reignited conversations around road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, particularly in student-populated areas.
