NILDS, ECOWAS Parliament Forge Partnership for Capacity Building

The newly elected Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hajia Maimunatu Ibrahima, has called for the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) to support in addressing challenges in the West African region.

During a courtesy visit to NILDS Director General, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, in Abuja, Hajia Ibrahima, the first female Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, expressed hope that NILDS would aid in capacity building for regional parliamentarians.

“Our region faces numerous challenges. I am hopeful that NILDS will enhance our parliament’s capacity to address these issues effectively. I count on your support to ensure the region’s progress and prosperity,” she stated.

Prof. Sulaiman assured that NILDS would collaborate with the ECOWAS Parliament, focusing on capacity building, conferences, and research.

“With our institute’s manpower, human resources, facilities, and reach, we will ensure that your leadership achieves the needed goals and objectives for the region,” Prof. Sulaiman affirmed.

He also congratulated the Speaker and expressed confidence in her ability to promote gender inclusivity in policymaking.

“We believe women should hold key positions in policymaking. Your election is a positive signal for all African women, and we are confident you will demonstrate that women can excel in leadership roles,” he added.

The visit concluded with the presentation of NILDS publications and other insignia to the Speaker.
