Nigerian Police arrests UNILAG lecturer over rape allegation

A lecturer at the University of Lagos, Dr Kadiri Akeem Bablola has been detained after being accused of raping a 20-year-old female undergraduate student in his office.

The Lagos state superintendent of police, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this on his X handle.

The victim accused the UNILAG Associate Professor of Botany of perpetrating the crime when she visited his office to sort out issues pertaining to her results.

The victim, who reported the case to an NGO, Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation (ISWEF) said that the incident occurred on the 16th of August, 2023.


The State’s Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, issued an arrest warrant for Babalola through the state high court after ISWEF reported the case to the gender unit of the state police command and through the officer in charge of gender.

The case also required the involvement of the university’s vice chancellor.

This incident happened few weeks after a lecturer with the University of Calabar was suspended over similar issue.
