The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 7,663 suspected cholera cases and 216 deaths across the country since the start of 2024.
This information was revealed in the Cholera Epidemiological Report for Week 36, presented by the NCDC during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.
“In Week 36, there were 141 suspected cases and one death, representing a case fatality rate of 0.7 percent. These cases were reported across 19 Local Government Areas in Katsina, Lagos, Kano, Jigawa, and Adamawa states,” the report stated.
Cumulatively, from Week 1 to Week 36 of 2024, 216 deaths were recorded, with a case fatality rate of 2.8 percent from 7,663 suspected cases.
The report further indicated that 35 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have reported at least one suspected case of cholera across 280 LGAs. It noted that 89 percent of suspected cases were concentrated in 10 states: Lagos (58%), Bayelsa (7%), Katsina (6%), Jigawa (5%), Zamfara (3%), Ebonyi (3%), Rivers (2%), Abia (2%), Ogun (2%), and Imo (1%).
Additionally, the report highlighted that 15 LGAs account for 57 percent of all cases, with Lagos Island LGA contributing the highest percentage at 8 percent.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacterium.
