The Court of Appeal in Abuja has confirmed Olumide Akpata as the Labour Party’s candidate for the Edo State gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21.
In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, the court dismissed the suit filed by Kenneth Imasuangbon, who sought to disqualify Akpata. The court held that the case lacked merit.
Presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, ruled that Imasuangbon had not exhausted the Labour Party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms before approaching the court. Additionally, the three-member panel determined that the claims made against Akpata were not supported by substantive evidence.
Imasuangbon had also alleged that Akpata failed to sign the indemnity form, but the court declared the claim to be statute-barred, stating that it had no jurisdiction to entertain it.
Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, secured the Labour Party’s ticket on February 23 after winning the party’s primary election with 316 votes, defeating Imasuangbon and four other aspirants.
The Edo State governorship election is set for September 21.
