Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, in partnership with the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), has initiated efforts to combat obstetric fistula in Nigeria through medical and financial interventions.
In preparation for the program’s launch, the ministry conducted a pre-implementation assessment in Katsina State to ensure smooth execution.
Speaking on the initiative, Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Maryam Keshinro, emphasized that the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in enhancing the health and well-being of women and girls.
She acknowledged ECOWAS and other partners for their dedication to eradicating obstetric fistula.
According to Dr. Keshinro, the program seeks to rehabilitate at least 60 vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) patients, provide specialized training for 30 healthcare professionals, and conduct fistula repair surgeries for 60 affected women and girls.
Additionally, 50% of the treated patients will receive economic reintegration assistance, including subsidies and technical support.
Project focal person, Mr. Ilyasu Omar Zubair, also commended ECOWAS and the federal government for their collaboration in addressing this critical health challenge.
