Nigeria: Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has issued a stern warning to road contractors who fail to meet contractual specifications, threatening to revoke agreements if standards are not met.
Speaking at an interactive session with contractors, the governor expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work by some firms, noting that while some contractors have completed their projects, others have made only 20% progress.
As part of enforcement measures, Governor Bago revoked a contract due to the contractor’s lack of capacity and issued a final warning to another firm. He also set a June deadline for all contractors to complete their projects and emphasized that fund disbursements will be based on visible progress to ensure accountability. The Urban Renewal Programme, launched in September 2023, aims to transform infrastructure across the state.
The governor pointed out that, despite the gradual approach of the wet season that could trigger floods, roads in many communities have been cleared, but drainage and earthwork have not been done
