President Bola Tinubu has accepted the voluntary resignation of the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Alhaji Ahmad Rufa’i Abubakar.
In a briefing at the State House, Abubakar cited personal and family reasons for his decision, emphasizing that his departure was not due to any serious issues. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for understanding his concerns and accepting his resignation.
“I discussed my decision with Mr. President, and he was very understanding. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve under his transformational leadership,” Abubakar stated.
Having served for 15 months under Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, Abubakar reflected on his tenure, highlighting his efforts in mentoring younger officers within the agency. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of the officers he had guided, ensuring the continuity of excellence in the NIA.
Appointed by President Buhari in 2018, Abubakar, a retired career diplomat, brought years of experience in international relations, mediation, and governance. He had previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations before taking on his role at the NIA.
