The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning about significant flooding expected in several Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Rivers State.
Godwin Tepikor, Director of Risk Reduction at NEMA in Port Harcourt, emphasized the need for local government support to mitigate the flood’s impact. High-risk LGAs include Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Degema, and Ahoada East and West, among others.
Additionally, the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), in its 2024 Annual Flood Outlook, has predicted high flood risks in 31 states encompassing 148 LGAs. Another 35 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 249 LGAs, are considered to be at moderate flood risk, while the remaining 377 LGAs fall into the low flood risk category.
