Nigeria: The National Industrial Court has delivered a landmark judgment ordering the Nigerian Navy to recognize Captain Dada Olaniyi Labinjo as a retired Vice-Admiral
The court ruled that Labinjo was wrongfully dismissed and directed the Navy to grant him all corresponding rights and benefits.
The judgment, delivered in Abuja, brings an end to Labinjo’s 24-year legal battle. The court ordered the Navy to amend Labinjo’s records to reflect his retirement as a Vice-Admiral, effective April 12, 2017.
Labinjo’s lawyer, Andy Igboekwe (SAN), hailed the decision as a long-overdue vindication and expressed confidence that the Navy will implement the court’s directives promptly.
The court’s ruling includes directives for the Navy to settle outstanding salaries and allowances, pay gratuity and pension, and award exemplary damages with a 10% annual interest until full settlement. The Navy is also required to publish the ruling across all relevant records.
