Awka, Nigeria — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Anambra State has declared its support for Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s second-term ambition, backing it with a financial contribution.
The students, representing various tertiary institutions, presented a cheque of N2 million, raised through individual donations ranging from N200 to N500, as a token of their appreciation for the governor’s contributions to education, youth development, and infrastructure.
Addressing a gathering at the International Convention Center in Awka, Governor Soludo expressed his gratitude for the students’ gesture, noting that similar endorsements had previously come from artisans and transport workers who benefited from his administration’s policies.
He also highlighted the low participation of Southeastern students in the federal student loan scheme and pledged to collaborate with student leaders to improve awareness and accessibility.
Reaffirming his dedication to education, the governor announced plans to introduce free tertiary education for Anambra indigenes and initiate discussions with landlords to lower student accommodation costs. Additionally, he unveiled a proposal to attract private investors to develop hostels, ensuring long-term returns on their investments.
To further ease students’ financial burdens, he revealed that his government would begin documenting Anambra indigenous students for bursary allocations and other support programs.
Speaking at the event, NANS South East Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Charles Ijomah, lauded the governor’s efforts across multiple sectors and assured him of the students’ unwavering support.
Institutions represented at the gathering included Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Federal Polytechnic Oko, Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe, and the Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze, among others.
