ALIERO, KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA– A mysterious illness has swept through the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), claiming the lives of five students under unexplained circumstances.
According to university sources, the first four deaths occurred last week, while another student succumbed to the illness on Sunday. The cause of the illness remains unknown, sparking anxiety within the academic community.
A recent visit by World Health Organisation (WHO) officials for a meningitis awareness campaign has fueled speculation about a possible link to the disease. However, university officials have not confirmed any connection.
Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, the university’s registrar, confirmed the deaths and stated that investigations are ongoing. “We have recorded four deaths based on our official reports, but the exact cause remains unknown. We recognize the urgency of the situation and are taking steps to address it,” Tilli said.
In response to the crisis, the university has sought guidance from the Kebbi State Ministry of Higher Education and requested permission to temporarily shut down the institution to prevent further fatalities.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) has also petitioned the administration, urging immediate action to safeguard students from the unknown health threat.
As the investigation continues, the university community remains on high alert, seeking answers and solutions to the mysterious illness.
