Bauchi, Nigeria — Tragedy struck in the Lushi community on the outskirts of Bauchi metropolis as a mob lynched a man identified simply as Peter over allegations of dog theft.
According to reports, Peter’s alleged accomplice, Dokagk Danlami, aged 38, narrowly escaped death after being severely beaten and macheted by the mob. He was swiftly taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for urgent medical attention.
Confirming the incident in a statement released Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Police Command, CSP Ahmed Wakil, stated that Danlami sustained serious head injuries. Peter, whose surname has not been confirmed, was found at the scene and later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
CSP Wakil further disclosed that an investigation has been launched, with the police working tirelessly to identify all persons involved in the mob action. He emphasized that no form of jungle justice would be tolerated under the present administration of the Bauchi Police Command.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the mob’s actions, describing the attack as “barbaric” and a blatant violation of the rule of law. He reiterated that no individual or group has the legal authority to subject any suspect to violent or dehumanizing treatment.
“Suspects involved in any alleged criminal activity must be handed over to law enforcement agencies for appropriate investigation and prosecution,” the Commissioner asserted, warning residents against taking laws into their hands.
