A mob gathered on Monday following an unfortunate incident involving a man named Yusuf who was struck by a BRT bus. Allegedly, Yusuf had been pushed by policemen in the Ketu area of Lagos State, leading to the tragic collision with the vehicle.
The Lagos State Police Command, however, refuted claims of an attack on the policeman involved, asserting that the situation was an accidental occurrence. The authorities emphasized that both the officer and the driver were victims of the mishap.
During the incident, a BRT bus traveling towards Lagos collided with Yusuf, causing him to collapse due to the impact. An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, attributed Yusuf’s predicament to the actions of the policemen, alleging that they were attempting to take possession of his vehicle. In the process, they inadvertently pushed him onto the BRT lane, resulting in the collision with the oncoming bus.
Another witness, who spoke hurriedly amid the chaos, revealed that the policemen attempted to flee after realizing the severity of Yusuf’s injuries. However, an angry mob intervened, apprehending one of the officers. The mob reacted strongly, beating the officer until he lost consciousness. Although the officer survived and was still breathing, the mob was clearly outraged by the treatment of Yusuf.
Amidst the commotion, an additional witness accused the policemen of trying to extort money from the victim. The scene was tense as bystanders rushed to assist Yusuf, who was lying motionless on the BRT lane. Some individuals poured water on him in an effort to revive him.
Meanwhile, officers from the Ketu Divisional Police Station arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control. The injured policeman, who also sustained injuries from the incident, was promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention.
In response to the incident, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the State Police Public Relations Officer, clarified that the incident was a result of a road accident involving a BRT bus and a minibus. He dismissed claims of intentional harm, emphasizing that both Yusuf and the injured policeman were victims of the same accident. He confirmed that both individuals had been rescued and were currently in stable condition.
