Man sentenced to 25 years in prison for drug trafficking

A man named Carr Bismark, also known as Ogbonna Charles Freeman, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for attempting to unlawfully export 889 grams of cocaine.
Bismark pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Justice Deinde Isaac Dipeolu handed down the sentence.

Bismark was arrested on March 31, 2024, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to India via Doha, UAE.

The prosecution, led by Mr. Abu Ibrahim, stated that Bismark’s actions violated the NDLEA Act and mandated a minimum sentence of 20 years for drug trafficking.

Despite Bismark’s admission of guilt and his lawyer’s plea for leniency, Justice Dipeolu decided to impose the maximum sentence allowed by law.
