Malawi Pulls Troops from DR Congo from peacekeeping mission

Lilongwe, Malawi  —  President Lazarus Chakwera has ordered the withdrawal of Malawian troops from their peacekeeping mission in the conflict-ridden eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The troops were initially deployed to help combat armed groups in the region. However, last week’s deadly attack on Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, resulted in at least 20 military casualties, including 14 South Africans and three Malawians.

President Chakwera, addressing the nation on Wednesday, stated that the decision aligns with efforts to honor a ceasefire declaration, despite ongoing hostilities.

Speaking on the development, Malawi’s Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, reaffirmed that the withdrawal was made in good faith.

“A resolution has been passed calling for a ceasefire from all parties involved in the conflict to facilitate peaceful reconciliation,” Kunkuyu stated.

The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group recently declared a unilateral ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. However, reports indicate that clashes persist in Nyabibwe, South Kivu province.

Chakwera has faced growing pressure to withdraw Malawian troops following the deaths of peacekeepers in the region.
