Liverpool Target Lookman as Salah’s Potential Successor

Liverpool, England  —  Liverpool have identified Super Eagles and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman as their primary target to replace Mohamed Salah should the Egyptian depart this summer.

With Salah’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and no renewal in place, speculation about his future has intensified. While Liverpool are keen to retain their star winger, Salah could be exploring new options, prompting the club to prepare for life after him.

Reports indicate that Barcelona’s Brazilian winger Raphinha has also been considered, but according to Italian outlet TMW (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool have placed Lookman “at the top of their transfer priority list” if Salah leaves.

There is a growing belief at Anfield that this could be Salah’s final season at the club. Paris Saint-Germain have been closely monitoring the 32-year-old and are reportedly interested in signing him, while lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League could also be on the table.

Despite struggling for consistency at Everton and RB Leipzig, Lookman has thrived at Atalanta since his arrival in 2022. The Nigerian international has registered an impressive 50 goals and 22 assists in 110 appearances across all competitions for the Serie A club.

His standout moment came in the 2023-24 season when he scored a historic hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing Atalanta’s first-ever European title. Lookman’s stellar performances earned him the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award, along with back-to-back Atalanta Player of the Season honors in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has hailed Lookman as “one of the best players in Europe and the world,” with the forward finishing 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings.

As transfer speculation swirls, Lookman remains focused on international duty, currently training with the Super Eagles in Kigali ahead of their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Friday.
