Kwara Government Raises Pensions for Retirees

Ilorin, NigeriaThe Kwara State Government has announced an upward review of monthly pensions, approving an increase of ₦10,000 for all state retirees.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the state’s Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, who confirmed that the revised pension structure will take effect from May 1, 2025.

Dr. Nuru stated that the decision follows an agreement signed between the state government and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC), facilitated by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) on May 23, 2025.

However, she expressed concern that 73.2% of state pensioners are yet to register with the Kwara State Resident Registration Agency (KWSRRA), despite nearly a year of awareness campaigns and multiple enrollment opportunities.

“We have made sufficient efforts to encourage registration. Going forward, only pensioners whose identities can be verified through KWSRRA will be eligible for the pension increment,” she noted.

The Finance Commissioner further revealed that the government uncovered fraudulent payroll activities allegedly orchestrated by a cartel working to sabotage the verification process. The matter has been reported to law enforcement for investigation and possible prosecution.

“This group is attempting to obstruct the KWSRRA process to shield ghost pensioners. We are committed to cleaning up the payroll and ensuring that public funds serve only legitimate beneficiaries,” Dr. Nuru affirmed.

The government reiterated its commitment to financial accountability and the welfare of genuine pensioners, while emphasizing the necessity of transparency in public service administration.
